Automated frequency optimisation
for turbomachinery using Simcenter 3D and HEEDS
Simcenter 3D and HEEDS
Efficient methods for safe, high-performance machine components
The optimisation of rotating machine components places high demands on precision, stability and development time. Modern simulation and optimisation tools now make it possible to specifically influence critical natural modes and reliably avoid resonance ranges.
The combination of Simcenter 3D and HEEDS enables fully automated frequency optimisation, from analysis right through to an evaluated design alternative.
Our technical approach:
The method we have developed focuses on three core elements:
- Rotor dynamics analysis with Simcenter 3D
Simcenter 3D provides the basis for assessing dynamic behaviour. Critical natural frequencies are precisely identified, enabling risks to be detected at an early stage.
- Automated parameter studies with HEEDS
HEEDS handles the systematic variation of relevant geometry and material parameters. Thanks to the integrated optimisation logic, robust designs are identified efficiently – without the need for any manual iteration steps.
- Mode tracking via the MAC matrix
A key component is mode tracking using the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC). This enables modal shapes to be uniquely assigned across different variants, even when geometry or damping changes significantly.

The result
A seamless, fully automated workflow
The workflow developed enables:
-
reliable identification of critical modes,
-
automated optimisation of relevant parameters,
-
a significant reduction in manual steps,
-
a faster evaluation of design variants,
-
greater reliability in the development process.
Companies thus benefit from more efficient development cycles and a robust basis for decision-making – particularly for demanding applications in the field of turbomachinery.
