Ready for VECTO: Certified simulation for maximum efficiency

Lorries and buses account for around a quarter of all CO₂ emissions from road transport. However, the Paris Agreement stipulates that lorry manufacturers must reduce the average CO2 emissions of new commercial vehicles by 15% by 2025 compared with 2019, and by 30% by 2030. To monitor this, the VECTO simulation tool was developed in 2019. This tool can be used to calculate the fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions of commercial vehicles. Truck manufacturers must now record the VECTO value for each of their vehicles.

The following data is required to calculate the VECTO value:

  • Simulated driving behaviour
  • Engine power
  • Tyre rolling resistance
  • Aerodynamic drag coefficient (cw)

Aerodynamic drag can be determined by means of an experimental constant-speed test. However, this method proves to be very labour-intensive.

Why act now?

One alternative is to determine the drag coefficient using CFD analysis. However, in order to use the drag coefficients calculated by a CFD analysis in VECTO, the analysis expert must be certified. To obtain certification, the analyst must demonstrate the quality of their simulation results by carrying out a comparative simulation themselves.

To do this, a drag coefficient analysis must be performed using a basic simulation model provided by the EU. In addition to the original base model, calculations involving add-on components must also be demonstrated. This involves integrating Tall Rear Flaps (TRF) and Long Side Covers (LSC) into the base model and repeating the drag coefficient simulation.
