Innovative in both function and design
When B+R developed a top case with an innovative opening mechanism for Niemann and Frey, we were asked to assist with the design.
It soon became clear to us that the circular element of the lid’s locking mechanism had to be the focal point of our design. Apart from the usual constraints (maximum external dimensions to allow for palletising, specified internal volume, manufacturing technology, etc.), we had a free hand in our work.

Drawings offer freedom
Even today, we still jot down our initial ideas in the traditional way, with pen and paper – not because we’re ‘old school’, but because it allows us to work quickly and with great freedom.

The physical model

The initial sketches were followed by numerous drawings and renderings, which played a crucial role in defining the form. Right up until the end, two versions of the final concept remained in the running – so we decided to produce both variants as 1:1 clay models in order to compare them directly and see how the differences would ‘feel’.
Whilst the left-hand side of the model features significantly cleaner lines, the right-hand side has a much more organic form.

From concept to production
In fact, the version with the sharper lines was ultimately chosen for the clay model as well. The fact that this decision was absolutely spot on is demonstrated by the reality that this product is still successful on the market, unchanged after more than 10 years, whilst none of its competitors from that time remain.
