Team Plasmatreat–d.u.h.Group lays the foundations for a successful season in Calpe

The Plasmatreat – d.u.h.Group team has laid an important foundation for the coming season with this year’s training camp. For the first time, the team deliberately chose Calpe on the Spanish Mediterranean coast as its location. The choice proved ideal due to its location, climate and training conditions.

At the same time, the team set new organisational standards. The training camp was extended to two weeks for the first time and deliberately scheduled earlier in the year to establish a solid foundation for the season. Particularly pleasing was the fact that the entire squad was able to attend; there were no absences due to illness.

A good start after the winter

Overall, the riders came through the winter well. However, in a few cases, gaps in their training became apparent; these were due to illness during the build-up and had to be taken into account on an individual basis.

The first week was therefore primarily about coming together. Both on a personal and sporting level, the aim was to gel as a team. On the bike, procedures had to be harmonised, group dynamics developed and a sense of camaraderie built up.

Focus on the fundamentals and individual development

The coaching staff, led by Werner Grundkötter and René Schmieder, deliberately focused on intensive basic training. This was a challenging task, as the squad of 14 riders is not only large but also varies considerably in ability.

Several athletes are competing in the elite category for the first time this year and were gradually introduced to the training’s scope and intensity. At the same time, the aim was to integrate the individual training plans from their home coaches effectively into the team’s training programme.

There were many moments during the training camp that showed this approach had paid off. Paula Jelinek achieved a particularly emotional success when she completed 170 kilometres for the first time on the final day of training before the rest day. “I feel pretty knackered, but mentally I’m feeling great. I’m happy to have managed it,” she said afterwards with a smile.

Ideal conditions in Calpe

The conditions on the ground also confirmed Calpe’s excellent reputation as a European cycling hotspot. Mild temperatures, varied terrain ranging from coastal roads to challenging climbs, a cycling-friendly infrastructure and very good road conditions provided ideal training conditions.

“You can really tell that cyclists are welcome here. Motorists are extremely considerate. That ensures safety and a high standard of training,” emphasised Werner Grundkötter.

“We have goals and big dreams for this team. We’re working on them behind the scenes with great attention to detail – together with dedicated partners and people whom we hope to inspire with our vision for cycling,” said Buske.

A positive conclusion and a clear outlook for the future

Overall, the training camp has been a great success. In sporting terms, the preparations have gone well; team spirit has grown significantly, and roles and responsibilities within the squad have become more clearly defined. “We want to be right up there at the front this year and make a real mark. I’m convinced that we can achieve this together,” said Buske. High expectations rest in particular on key players Katharina Venjakob and Anna Scheffler. The team also considers itself well-positioned in the sprint events.

Upcoming fixtures for the season

For now, the focus is on recovery, before players work individually on their fitness and performance. The start of the season is just around the corner.

  • Next up is the Poko Cup in Olfen and Werne on 20 and 21 March. From 11 to 12 April, the team will take part in the Berlin Open Championships and compete in the Airfield Race Berlin.
  • A special highlight will follow at the end of April with the 24-hour charity event as part of the open day at the Bethel Children’s and Youth Hospice.
