Münster Municipal Utilities: Innovation and Sustainability
With over 1,400 employees, Stadtwerke Münster supplies the city’s residents with electricity, natural gas, district heating, drinking water and fibre-optic internet. It also promotes sustainable mobility solutions and is increasingly focusing on digital services and renewable energy. Customer satisfaction is always the top priority – whether through personalised advice or digital services that make everyday life easier.

the project
Applying for school travel passes online
Stadtwerke Münster wanted to simplify the application process for student travel cards for local public transport and digitise the paper-based ordering process. The aim was to develop a user-friendly application that would not only simplify ordering but also make the approval processes more efficient.
In collaboration with the d.u.h.Group, the ‘Schülerportal’ was developed – a digital platform that forms an integral part of Mobilität Münster’s low-code strategy. Thanks to Mendix, the application was developed quickly and integrated seamlessly into the existing system landscape.

„Stadtwerke Münster would like to thank the d.u.h.Group for the excellent collaboration and for driving forward our joint projects in the digitalisation of mobility services. It was particularly helpful that the d.u.h.Group responded flexibly to new requirements and communicated proactively. This enabled smooth coordination and adaptation throughout the entire course of the project. We look forward to continuing to develop innovative solutions together in the future.“

conclusion
Highlights and results: Digital efficiency and high levels of acceptance
The biggest challenge was the digitisation and optimisation of the student ticket application process, including its seamless integration into existing systems. It was also necessary to ensure that existing tickets were transferred to the new system, in order to enable a seamless transition for existing customers. Coordination with over 90 schools and school authorities was crucial for a smooth roll-out. After all, the system had to be ready in time for the start of the 2024/2025 school year.
Highlights and results:
- Over 2,000 ticket requests in the first month thanks to the intuitive interface
- A multi-device-compatible portal that can be used on desktops, tablets and smartphones
- Optimised processes through digital workflows and greater transparency
- Close collaboration with specialist departments and end-users to ensure smooth implementation

technology
Low-code: Rapid development, flexible customisation
The digital solution for Stadtwerke Münster was developed using Mendix, a leading low-code platform. Low-code accelerates software development by enabling applications to be created in a visually driven development environment, rather than being programmed from scratch. This allows for a more agile, efficient and flexible implementation of digital solutions.
